WESG 2016 Finals are currently underway, taking place January 12th to 15th in Changzhou, China at the Changzhou Olympic Stadium. The total prizepool across all gaming disciplines is $5.5 million – a cool $1,500,000 for Dota 2 alone. Twenty-four national teams from across the world gathered to kick off the new year.
After two days of fierce competition the WESG Group Stage results are in! The hopes of twelve teams were cut short. Twelve other teams have made their nations proud as they advanced into the playoffs.
Cloud 9 and Alliance toppled over their competition in their respective groups – securing a cool 13 points each and a spot directly into the quarter finals. Joining them in the advanced placement of the brackets is TnC Pro and To.be.or.not.to.be – a team from China that seemed to come out of left field. All four teams are guaranteed to walk away with a piece of the prize pool for their efforts and success – $10,000 minimum.
Team DileCom and MVP.Revolution (formerly NoLifer5) secured the second and third place position in Group A – edging out the popular Horde squad and the Brazilian and South African squads.
While SG e-sports seemed to blow away most of their competition and slide into the second spot – the third place position went down to the wire between Fantastic Five and Team Romania. The two veteran filled teams engaged in some fierce rivalry until the end of the day. Splitting their series, Team Romania ended with the edge and lead to take a hard earned position in the playoffs.
Group C was incredibly close – both Alliance and DUOBAO Young ended with 13 points a piece and tied for the much coveted first position. In the end the Swedes secured their place in the quarter finals – gaining the first seed due to time rating. The same story played out for the third place position as a three way tie was broken and the lucky team was Dark Passage also due to time rating.
One of the most disappointing results of the event so far was witnessed in Group D. Team Ukraine – one of the fan favorites for the event saw an early exit from the tournament as they landed into the fourth position at the end of the day. Infamous and TnC Pro tied for the first place spot – ultimately giving TnC the first seed due to head-to-head match up. MAX.Y, another rising Chinese team took their group by storm, upsetting TnC and Signature.Trust 2:0 and taking a win off of Comanche and Team Ukraine.
The action begins tomorrow, January 14th at 04:00 CET with the Round of 12 playoffs. Four teams will see their last matches for the event and walk away empty handed. Four teams will advance to the quarterfinals and secure at least $10,000 in prize money.
