The Red Bull Battle Grounds playoffs kick off today. Five teams, one from each of the major regions – Invictus Gaming (China), Team Malaysia (SEA), Team Secret (Europe), HellRaisers (CIS), and Summer’s Rift (NA), will fight over three days, May 5-7, in Santa Monica.
The Red Bull Battle Grounds playoffs format is new for the Dota 2 scene. Each of the five participating teams starts with three lives. In the order of their seeding, each team challenges another one to a best of one match. The losing team loses a life. When a team has lost all three lives, they’re eliminated from the tournament.
The top two teams will enter the best-of-five Grand Finals held at the Historic Warfield Theater, in San Francisco, on May 10.
Of the five teams playing in the Red Bull Battle Grounds playoffs in Santa Monica, the three teams not advancing to the finals will be invited to participate in the LAN taking place just a day before the Grand Finals, in San Jose, at the AFK Lounge.
Battle Grounds will be one of the first major tournaments to sport the 6.84 patch. The tournament might help tip the scale for some teams, which may be on the fence for a TI5 direct invite.
