Nanyang Championships season 2 day 1 has concluded. Both Western teams – Team Empire and Digital Chaos have dropped to the lower brackets after disappointing performances. The SEA team – WarriorsGaming.Unity have also dropped to the lower brackets, leaving on the Chinese teams to fight among themselves in the upper brackets. The action resumes with the last upper bracket preliminaries between ViCi Gaming.Reborn and Newbee – a series expected to be intense.

Starting off on the wrong foot, with three premier teams in as many days dropping from the event, Nanyang was looking to become another Chinese and KeyTV disaster. Only days before the event, Nanyang was scrambling to pull together teams to fill the gap.

KeyTV’s reputation was on the line as they were the original partners hired for the Shanghai Major. The production company was fired after two days of incessant problems disrupting the Shanghai Major Groupstage.

With more of a Summit style approach – including being played at a villa with catered food, basketball court, Xbox, VR, kareoke, and even archery there have been no formal or published complaints so far.

Rounding out the first day both of the Western teams – Digital Chaos and Team Empire were knocked into the lower brackets with 2:0 sweeps by CDEC.Youth and Wings Gaming respectively. The two teams are staged to play each other in the lower bracket elimination series on July 8th.

LGD knocked WarriorsGaming.Unity into the lower brackets also with a 2:0 sweep.

The last team to be fall into the lower brackets will be determined on July 7th between ViCi Gaming.Reborn and Newbee.

Nanyang Championships season 2 day 1 recap

Digital Chaos vs CDEC.Youth

Digital Chaos were swept up by the qualified Chinese replacement team CDEC.Youth. It seems that they North American team had underestimated their opponents and started to use some new drafting strategies that did not serve them well in the end.

Team Empire vs Wings Gaming

Team Empire’s performance was less than desirable and expected. Although the first match the CIS team picked up a Timbersaw and looked to be even for the first 15 minutes, they quickly lost their spunk. The second game they were completely dominated by Wings in only 26 minutes.

LGD vs WarriorsGaming.Unity

As expected LGD Gaming overpowered the SEA team in both games. Zhang “xiao8” Ning was looking impressive as usual and the TI6 bound team is looking to make their presence known.

Nanyang Championships season 2

The second season of Nanyang Championships took fans by surprise when it was quietly announced to be scheduled July 6th-10th and held in China instead of Singapore, where the first season was hosted. Event details were slow to trickle in and be communicated.

Team Secret was the first directly invited team to announce its participation to defend their title.

NanYang Dota 2 Championships Season 2 (NYC) is the second Dota 2 tournament organized by KeyTV (ex-LGDTV) and is one of SEA’s largest Dota 2 tournaments. Eight of the world’s best Dota 2 teams were expected compete in Shanghai for the $200,000 base prize pool.

Nanyang Championships season 2 participating teams

On July 1, it was it was announced that Fnatic would be withdrawing from the event due to issues with Djardel Jicko B. “DJ” Mampusti’s visa. As a result, NYC s2 organizers had replaced the Malaysian team with LGD Gaming.

The following day organizers reported that Evil Geniuses notified Nanyang Championships of their decision to withdraw due to issues obtaining a visa for Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassan.

One day later, it would be Team Secret that would pull out of Nanyang Championships s2, citing ongoing issues with the event.

The organizers then decided to replace both Team Secret and Evil Geniuses with two Chinese teams that would qualify for the event.

  • Newbee – directly invited
  • Wings Gaming – qualified
  • Team Empire – qualified
  • Digital Chaos – qualified
  • WarriorsGaming.Unity – qualified
  • LGD Gaming – invited replacement for Fnatic
