The MDL 2016 group stage results are in! Yesterday Newbee and Evil Geniuses had already secured a place in the upper brackets for the playoffs. Today, OG and Team Secret have also clinched their spots in the upper brackets. ViCi Gaming, MVP.Phoenix, LGD Forever Young, and Invictus Gaming.Vitality will begin their journey in the lower brackets. All matches in the playoffs are best-of-three but two teams will be eliminated in the first day of playoffs. The action resumes tomorrow with upper bracket semi finals between Newbee and OG at 04:00 CEST.
The MDL 2016 group stage results were nothing less than expected. OG and Team Secret have proven their new rosters were everything that fans had hoped for and were hyped up to be. With both teams securing their place in the upper brackets for the playoffs – they will face the Newbee and Evil Geniuses respectively.
OG and Team Secret look to be in top form and have already displayed much synchronicity and chemistry out of the gates.
The rest of China and the only SEA team will be starting in the lower brackets fighting their way through a longer journey to the finals. Two of the teams will be eliminated tomorrow, ending their first post TI6 LAN early and with no doubt some disappointment and areas to focus on for practice.
The playoffs will begin with two upper bracket semi finals before heading to the lower brackets for the two elimination series.
MDL 2016 group stage results: Group A
The day started out with Team Secret completely dominating LGD Forever Young in both games in their series. The three new additions to the team – Pyo “MP” No-a, Zheng “MidOne” Yeik Nai and Lee “Forev” Sang-don really pulled their weight and had outstanding performances. MP had two flawless matches without dying a single time.
Secret then moved on to face MVP.Phoenix, ending in a three game series in order to determine a winner. MVP.Phoenix took the first match of the series with a fantastic showing by Kim “Velo” Tae-sung on Timbersaw. After a fairly even match for the first 20 minutes, MVP were able to pull ahead after taking the first Roshan. Team Secret’s Drow strategy didn’t seem to work out for them and MVP’s aggression and push was too much for them. The second match was when the European/SEA mix was able to really shine with their defensive strategy and team fights. Taking the victory they evened out the score and pushed a deciding third game. The last match again gave Team Secret better defense and team fights, taking the advantage and lead over MVP’s ganking lineup early on. With their win, Team Secret secured their place in the upper brackets.
MDL 2016 group stage results: Group B
The first match for Group B took almost one hour to complete. ViCi Gaming and IG.Vitality battled it out fairly evenly for the first 40 minutes before ViCi Gaming were able to secure enough of a lead to take the game. The second match was overwhelmingly in favor of IG.Vitality – giving their first win of the event and closing the deal in only 20 minutes. Su “super” Peng had a flawless game on Silencer as did Zhang “Yuno” Chengjun on morphling. The team then seemed to ride on their momentum cruising into the third match with much energy. In another flawless game by Yuno – this time on slark – the team easily gained the series and played much more coordinated than the previous day.
Heading into their second series of the day, IG.Vitality had to go head to head with the European stars – OG. What the Chinese team had gained in momentum and excitement was quickly put to rest when they were plowed over by OG in only 24 minutes with a score of 19:6. Gustav “s4” Magnusson’s Axe was too much to handle. The second match was slightly better for the Chinese team as they went with their strong and comfort heroes. Johan “N0tail” Sundstein’s Void and Jesse “JerAx” Vainikka ‘s Bloodseeker didn’t mind at all and demolished IG.Vitality easily. OG swept through to victory and the upper bracket seed in the playoffs.
