Evil Geniuses eliminated from Shanghai China in surprising upset by Team Liquid

Team Liquid saw Evil Geniuses eliminated from the Shanghai Major in the Lower Bracket finals. In an amazing and surprising upset, Team Liquid quickly defeated Evil Geniuses 2:0 to advance to the Grand Finals. The former TI5 team will take the third place spot. Team Liquid will face off against Team Secret in the best-of-five Grand Finals at 08:00 CET

The last day of the Shanghai Major saw the TI5 Championship team, Evil Geniuses eliminated in a shocking upset. Team Liquid was able to turn the first game into a success when they stole the win right out from under the North American pride. They then hit the second game with adrenaline rushing through their veins and they emotions high. Riding on the momentum, they completely shut down Evil Geniuses in a most convincing manner.

Both teams have had incredible runs in the event marked with unparalleled teamwork, coordination and synergy. Both teams had magnificent individual plays and contributions that only serve to indicate the high caliber status that they have both achieved.

Team Liquid rose through to the Grand Finals after qualifying for the Shanghai Major in the European Regional qualifiers. They then cruised along through the Group stage to place in the upper brackets to fall only in the Upper Bracket finals to Team Secret. They dropped to the Lower Bracket finals to face Evil Geniuses and will now rise again for a rematch against Team Secret in the Grand Finals.

Evil Geniuses eliminated at this stage give the team third place.

Team Liquid vs. Evil Geniuses

The first game of the series looked to be Evil Geniuses in the early and mid game. Having a slight advantage that lasted until 37 minutes, the North American’s seemed to be in control. However, their beautiful and perfectly time combos in fights by Evil Geniuses would not be enough to bring the North American team victory as Team Liquid was able to sweep in and turn the game. A team wipe on EG forced Artour “Arteezy” Babaev to buyback-dieback with Team Liquid already in base. The European squad surprising took the first victory.

Team Liquid was riding high on the momentum from the first game of the series, and started out the second with a courier snipe and first blood. They were able to take the game from the start and held tightly to their victory. The aggression from Team Liquid was too much for Evil Geniuses and a perfect game by Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen on Ursa was too strong. The final moments of what would turn out to be the last game of the series showed how Team Liquid was able to completely dominate and easily destroy Evil Geniuses.

The Shanghai Major main event

The Shanghai Major main event will take place between March 2nd-6th, at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, in Shanghai, China. Viewers and visitors are in for dawn to dusk action. The Grand Finals will take place on Sunday, March 6th.

Format

Sixteen teams will play a double-elimination bracket.

Eight teams (top two teams of each of the four groups) will start the main event in the Upper Bracket. Eight teams (bottom two teams of each of the four groups) will start the main event in the Lower Bracket.

All the Upper Bracket match-ups will be best-of-three series.

The first two rounds of the Lower Bracket matches will be best-of-one elimination series. The following rounds will be best-of-three elimination series.

The Shanghai Dota Major Grand Finals will be best-of-five series, with no winners’ advantage.
