Shanghai Major Group A started with a major delay due to the power being cut in the Chinese broadcast. However, despite the significant starting delays, the event cruised along at a steady pace until the last series of the day between EHOME and Team Secret. The match was postponed one hour due to one EHOME player going to the hospital with health issue to have an infected tooth removed. Upon the completion of the procedure, he returned promptly for the match.
In an incredible surprising first day, the Shanghai Major Group A results were completely contrary to popular belief. MVP.Phoenix, the Korean squad that was believed to be the weakest team in the group, upset both EHOME and Team Secret in dramatic 2:0 sweeps. MVP.Phoenix executed their strategies with confidence and precision, securing themselves an upper bracket seeding for the main event.
MVP are your Top Seed from Group A as they defeat Team Secret in a quick 2-0. You definitely weren't expecting that today. #ShanghaiMajor

As surprising as MVP.Phoenix’s success was in the Shanghai Major Group A, EHOME‘s struggles were equally as unforeseen. After being shellacked by the Koreans 2:0, they struggled to take their series against CDEC 2:1. They then showed signs of trouble against Team Secret towards the mid game of the first match. Team Secret went on to wipe through EHOME, sending them to the lower brackets for the main event.
The TI5 runner up team that had been dubbed the Cinderella Story in 2015, CDEC, will now have to take the lower bracket road in the main event as they attempt to redeem themselves and their reputation.

Shanghai Major Group A recap
Shanghai Dota Major – Group A
CDEC vs Team Secret
Secret series was sick. Beautiful teamfights from everyone on that squad. Puppey Enigma too damn good.
— Maut (@MautDota) February 25, 2016
It took only four minutes for Team Secret to take the first tower down but 14 minutes before they secured first blood in the first match against CDEC. However, in the end it would be a heavily one sided match in favor of CDEC that was over in 34 minutes with a score of 21:6. Not to be outdone just yet, Team Secret swung back at CDEC with an equally one sided victory to tie up the series in only 24 minutes.
The third game was witness to an amazing game for Team Secret with another Enigma and Tide hunter pick for Clement “Puppey” Ivanov and Rasmus “MiSeRy” Filipsen. Both players had performed outstanding during the series and earned MVP Vote from many, bringing the Europeans to triumph over the Chinese team.
Shanghai Major Group A: CDEC 1:2 Team Secret. Team Secret advance in the upper brackets of the group stage, CDEC plays loser match
MVP.Phoenix vs EHOME
And with one final push, @SC2MVP takes down @EHOMECN 2-0! What an upset for what many considered to be tournament favorites.#ShanghaiMajor

MVP.Phoenix pulled off a surprising upset with their convincing 2:0 sweep over EHOME. While the Chinese team typically does not have the best starts in their tournaments, MVP.Phoenix were regarded by most as the weakest team in the group and EHOME the strongest. The Korean squad demonstrated some incredible individual plays and really solid team cohesion and synergy. The first game had a truly dominant performance by Kim “QO” Seon-yeop on Earth Spirit and on Slark in the second match. Pyo “MP” No-a’s Invoker in the second game was spot on and the Koreans impressed once again in only 30 minutes.
Shanghai Major Group A: MVP.Phoenix 2:0 EHOME. MVP.Phoenix advance in the upper brackets of the group stage. EHOME plays the loser match.
CDEC vs EHOME
The series between CDEC and EHOME had a lot on the line, with the loser of the two teams being seeded into the lower brackets for the main event. CDEC started out the game with the lead as EHOME tends to usually have weak laning phases. Wang “old chicken” Zhiyong on OD and Chen “Cty” Tianyu on Ursa ended up being too much for CDEC to handle and were able to seize the first match victory. CDEC answered their loss with a win in the second game, after Sun “Agressif” Zheng really shined on Earth Spirit with some incredible kills and plays. CDEC’s aggressive playstyle payed off for them and their triumph forced a deciding third game. The last game gave life to a warlock pick for EHOME paired with a Phoenix. EHOME took some over-extensions and aggressive plays but in the end it all worked for them. EHOME took the final victory and force CDEC into the lower brackets of the main event.
Shanghai Major Group A: CDEC 1:2 EHOME. EHOME will continue in the upper bracket group stage. CDEC starts in the lower bracket for the main event.
MVP.Phoenix vs Team Secret
MVP.Phoenix tackled this series against Team Secret head on from the start. In only 18 minutes they outplayed Team Secret in an overwhelmingly one sided game. The second game started much in the Korean’s favor as well. In another 23 minute easy game, the Koreans again dominated and trampled over the Europeans.
5Mins, Febby got 2 couriers, wasted 2 enemy sentries and enabled a kill on Invoker. Early game = secured

Shanghai Major Group A: MVP.Phoenix 2:0 Team Secret. MVP.Phoenix advances to the upper bracket of the main event. Team Secret will continue to compete in the group stage for their bracket placement.
EHOME vs Team Secret
The decider series between Team Secret and EHOME started one hour late due to medical issues on the side of EHOME. However, in watching the first game, there was nothing apparent about it as EHOME charged in to take an early lead in the first match. It would not be enough to secure their win as Team Secret took the lead mid game and quickly ended the match only moments later. The second match was very one sided with Team Secret plowing through the Chinese team with their TideHunter and Engima combo.
At 3/1/7, @PieLieDieDota has been in on all 10 of @teamsecret's kills as of 15 minutes. No other player in on more than 6.
