The upcoming ESL One Frankfurt LAN playoffs and finals, scheduled to take place in Germany between June 20-21, will be held in open-air, due to a roof tear at the Commerzbank Arena.
According to German newspaper welt.de, the retractable inner roof of the Commerzbank-Arena Frankfurt – one of the biggest stadiums in Germany, with a capacity of more than 52,000, has been damaged during construction work over the weekend. During set up between two events, a crane slit a 35-meter-long hole into the arena’s roof membrane.
ESL announced the development on their website. Local weather forecasts predict low chances of precipitation and bearable temperatures for June 20-21. However, ESL reassure attendants that they have taken steps to ensure that the event experience will not be affected by weather conditions:
We have taken steps to ensure that the event experience will not be affected by it. All seats are covered by the fixed main roof, and all tournament and production elements as well as the festival and partner expo area inside the stadium will also be protected from rain.
ESL added they will be using “outdoor screens specifically built for daylight and glare”.
