MDL Winter 2015 playoffs; EG and Team Secret drop to Lower Brackets

The MDL Winter 2015 playoffs day 1 have reached an end. The Groupstage was finally completed today, giving way to the seedings for the brackets. The groupstage rounded out with a four way tie between Team Secret, compLexity, LGD Gaming and EHOME. After the dust settled LGD Gaming was seeded along with ViCi Gaming into the second round of the Upper Brackets. EHOME, Team Secret joined Evil Geniuses and OG in the first round of the Upper Brackets. Newbee and compLexity Gaming were seeded into the Lower Brackets. First Round of Upper Brackets sent both EG and Team Secret to the Lower Brackets. The eight remaining teams will continue to compete for the $270,000 prize pool. Action resumes on Friday, January 29th, at 03:00 CET.

The MDL Winter 2015 playoffs got underway after the remaining matches from the previous day’s groupstage was completed.

A four way tie in Group B le to additional matches for fans to enjoy and put emotions on the line as teams had to compete for the lower brackets or upper bracket route to the finals. Once the seeding was completed the playoffs started with the first round of Upper Bracket matches.

Both EG and Team Secret were swept away to the lower brackets, giving way for OG and EHOME to advance to the semi finals Upper Brackets. ViCi Gaming and LGD were both seeded directly to the semi finals in the Upper Brackets with their first place positions in the group.

MDL Winter 2015 Groupstage recap

The last four series were played at the start of the day. With the delays and inordinate amount of games planned for yesterday to complete the groupstage phase, it ended up being impossible. Games were postponed and kicked off the first playoff day. The remaining games directly impacted the seeding results for the brackets.

Group A

OG finished out their groupstage matches today playing verses Newbee. The Europeans were able to sweep through the Chinese team 2:0 to secure their second place position in the group. The victory allowed for OG to advance in the Upper Brackets for the playoffs.

ViCi Gaming and Evil Geniuses clashed in the early hours of the morning for their playoff spots. ViCi Gaming’s team play and synergy seem to spot on as they continue to have great rotations and coordination. The Chinese stars knocked EG into a third place position tie with Newbee in the groups with their 2:0 victory. ViCi Gaming retained the first place position and will advance into the second round of the Upper Brackets.

EG had to face Newbee, both being tied for third place in the groups. EG were able to take the one game victory and were bumped into third place. Third place gave the North Americans the Upper Bracket spot, while Newbee was dropped to the Lower Brackets.

Group B


Team Secret and compLexity Gaming started the day off with a 1:1 draw in their series. The result produced a four way tie between EHOME, LGD Gaming, Team Secret and compLexity Gaming which had to played for seeding purposes.

Team Secret and compLexity had to face off once again for a one game match in the tie breaker. After 48 minutes of back and forth leads and advantages, Team Secret managed to secure their victory with a game finishing rampage by Jacky “Eternal Envy” Mao. Team Secret advance to the Upper Brackets, compLexity Gaming advance to the Lower Brackets.

EHOME and LGD Gaming faced off in a one game tie breaker series. Chen “Cty” Tianyu took the challenge head on after his recovery of illness that sent him to the hospital yesterday. Today’s plays were point on and continued to showcase his talent and impact on the team’s success. Zhang “LaNm” Zhicheng’s familiars secured a triple kill for him in base and changed the tides of a game ending battle, but it wasn’t enough to turn the game. LGD Gaming took the victory and advance to the second round in the Upper Brackets, EHOME will advance in the Upper Brackets.

EHOME and Evil Geniuses squared off in the first playoffs series of the event. EHOME came out of the gates running, trampling over the North American’s with a 16 minute victory, leaving EG questioning what had happened. Evil Geniuses picked up the pieces and approached the second match with calm and tact. EG was able to take the second win and push the series to a deciding third game. EHOME took the third game from the EG allowing EHOME to advance further into the Upper Brackets to face ViCi Gaming. EG has fallen to the lower brackets to face compLexity in a North American show down tomorrow.

Team Secret and OG encountered each other in the upper brackets of the playoffs today. OG seemed to have the stronger drafting, something many accredited to Team Secret switching drafters to Jacky “Eternal Envy” Mao. OG were able to take both wins from under Team Secret in very convincing manner. They have continued to show their ability to adapt to situations and tackle challenges with a strong presence and solidarity. The first game showcased Amer “Miracle-“ al-Barqawi on Anti Mage with a perfect run. He topped the networth charts with 15k gold more than Team Secret’s most farmed hero. The second game was an easy victory. In 16 minutes the game was over with Team Secret landing only 2 kills and having no chance at all quite early to stage a comeback. With their victories, OG continues into the Upper Brackets Semi Finals to face LGD Gaming. Team Secret drop to the Lower Brackets to face Newbee.
