Boston Major results were quick, 2:0 victories across the board, bringing heartbreak and dejection to four eliminated teams early in the event. Evil Geniuses’s had eliminated Wings Gaming and compLexity Gaming were sent home by the Malaysian team WG.Unity. IG.Vitality and MVP.Phoenix were knocked out as well by their European opponents. The second group of eight teams – Digital Chaos, Team Faceless, EHOME, Team NP, Ad Finem, Newbee, LGD Gaming and LGD Gaming.FY will be heading onto the field as four more teams will be eliminated. Only eight teams will remain by tomorrow. Action kicks off at 10:00 EST/16:00 CET.
The Boston Major results proved that in a single elimination bracket format, no team was safe.
Virtus.Pro – the new titans of Europe, struggled against their opponents IG.Vitality. While the CIS favorites did at last clinch the series with a 2:0 sweep – it was not without a hard fought battle and a near cost of their undefeated record. IG.Vitality had exposed weaknesses in both play style and drafting that in the end were not able capitalize on.
A first round collision of TI5 vs TI6 championship teams – Evil Geniuses vs Wings Gaming meant inevitable heartbreak for fans across the theater. Not even these giants were safe from an early exit. Wings Gaming grappled with Evil Geniuses’ efficiency and rotations. Something had gone askew for the Chinese headliners, showing more botchy plays and less of their signature confidence and synergy. In a 2:0 sweep, Evil Geniuses had clipped the defending TI champions’ Wings, grounding them to a halt at the Boston Major.
The two teams with the lowest odds of coming out on top went head to head next. Both compLexity and WG.Unity had proven in the group stage that they had the potential to be a dark horse and turn the tables across the board on their opponents. coL had upset EG not once, but twice in the group stage – fueling a fervor and fiery spirit for the North American team heading onto the main stage. WG.Unity had shockingly upset Wings 2:1 one round. WG.Unity were relentless in their strike against the North Americans. Armed with superior drafting, both games were relatively even in the laning phases and early games, only for WG.Unity to then pull full speed ahead without looking back once. Their 2:0 victory sent complexity home early.
OG headed out to meet MVP.Phoenix with confidence and classic drafts. The two time valve championship team appeared to be poised and cool, farming away in both games with adeptness and efficiency that would overpower the Koreans. MVP.Phoenix tried to use aggression and capitalize on mistakes to gain advantages, but couldn’t shake the strength and utility from the Europeans. The last series of the night ended in the same manner as it began – with a 2:0 sweep.
IG.Vitality, compLexity Gaming, Wings Gaming and MVP.Phoenix walked away after one series on the main stage and with $62,500 each. Four more teams will join them today to continue to watch from the sidelines.
The battle continues to day with Team Faceless going head to head with Digital Chaos at 10:00 EST/16:00 CET.
