D2CL Season 5 gets underway today for the four teams that have qualified to the LAN finals. ViCi Gaming, Burden United, Team Empire and Ninjas in Pyjamas have all arrived in Berlin to compete in the LAN finals starting later this afternoon. The teams are competing for $50,000+ prize pool.
Mixing it up a bit, organizers have forgone the traditional LAN finals event and instead opted that the D2CL Season 5 LAN finals would not be open to the public. However, according to the organizers, viewers will be able to “see everything not only in-game, but also outside of it”. No details have been released on the exact nature of the special broadcast.
D2CL Season 5 kicked off on February 23. The event is being held in collaboration with Natus Vincere and Virtus.Pro, with a prize pool of over $50,000. An additional $2.50 for each Dota 2 Champions League Bundle sold and 10% of every set sold will be added to the prize pool. In addition, all travel expenses for the attending teams will be paid by D2CL. As of April 28, the total prize-pool has reached $79,397.

Tobiwan, Maelk, Soe, Blitz, Durka, Capitalist, Maelstorm, and LighTofHeaveN will be in charge of match commentaries and analysis. Both an English stream and a Russian Stream will be live during the LAN finals.

D2CL Season 5 tickets are available for $9.99. The bundle contains the D2CL Season 5 ticket, the Regalia of the Sol Guard set, the Slark Crawblade weapon, and the D2CL Season 5 HUD and Loading screen. 25% of the proceeds of each sale contributes towards the D2CL Season 5 LAN finals prize pool.

Team Empire have toppled ViCi Gaming, 2:1, in today’s D2CL Season 5 Upper Bracket finals and will advance to the Grand Finals scheduled for tomorrow, at 15:30 GMT. With spot on plays by ALOHASANCE and strong drafts in the first two games versus Burden United, Team Empire was looking confident going into the match against the tournament favorites, ViCi Gaming. With the new patch 6.84 changes supporting more team fighting and less creep farming, Team Empire’s aggressive play style was perfectly suited to best ViCi Gaming.

Qualifiers
Teams
A total of 16 teams took part in the qualifiers for the event.
Eight teams represented the EU region: Natus Vincere, Alliance, Team Empire, Ninjas in Pyjamas, HellRaisers, Power Rangers, Burden United, and Balkan Bears Corleone
Eight teams represented China: Invictus Gaming, E-HOME, Newbee, Vici Gaming, LGD Gaming, HyperGloryTeam were invited, while Vici Gaming Potential and CDEC Gaming had to qualify for their spots
Format
For each region, teams were placed in a Round Robin and played one match against every other team.
In the EU region, the top team advanced directly to the LAN finals and the top two teams in the online playoffs advanced to the playoffs.
In China, the top teams advanced to the online playoffs and the one winner advanced to the LAN finals.
EU group results
Burden United have already grabbed their LAN spot thanks to strong performances topping the group stage. The team surprised most by placing first in the group stages, above teams such as Na’Vi, Team Empire and The Alliance. BU ended the series 11-3.
Team Empire and Ninjas in Pyjamas faced off in a long and grueling best-of-five series that was pushed to the fifth game to determine Team Empire’s victory. However, both teams advanced to the D2CL Season 5 LAN finals.
China playoffs results
ViCi Gaming, LGD, IG, and E-Home.cn were the top four teams to advance to the regional playoff phase.
VG advanced to the best-of-five finals with ease, sweeping through first E-Home.cn and then LGD with no problems.
