AGES 2016 (ASEAN Games for esports) has been delayed due to internet troubles experienced by Telekom Malaysia, the country’s largest internet service provider. Damaged undersea cables have significantly slowed internet speed in Malaysia, causing problems for the multinational tournament. The event will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia featuring a 1 million MYR (approximately $240,000) prize pool. No new date has been determined yet.
AGES 2016 was set to take place one week from now, starting on March 18th. However, Telekom Malaysia had reported there has been significant damage sustained by the undersea cables. A restoration process is necessary immediately.
The damage and the process have caused internet speeds to become effected, drastically slowing down the connection for users. In an effort to uphold fair-play, AGES has delayed the event until the matter can be resolved. This will allow Malaysian players to compete in qualifiers with the same provisions as the other participating countries.
In an announcement made on the AGES 2016 site, organizers have extended the online qualifying stage to April 16 and 17. New dates for the main event have yet to be announced.
The event announced on February 4th, was originally scheduled take place from March 18-20th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and feature a 1 million MYR (approximately $240,000) prize pool.
As ASEAN is a regional event, players from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam will be able to compete in Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and FIFA ’16. Registration for the event started after the Chinese New Year.

The ASEAN Games for eSports (AGES) 2016 will be hosted by eSports Malaysia, in partnership with the Malaysian Ministry Youth & Sports, Ministry of Communications & Multimedia, and Ministry of Higher Education. The event will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia featuring a 1 million MYR (approximately $240,000) prize pool.
AGES 2016 is part of an initiative to bring together various esports organizations from over the SEA region. It includes the Philippine eSports Organization (PeSO), Singaporean Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) and Indonesian eSports Association (IeSPA), among others. The goal is continue to promote and enhance eSports in the region and create stronger ties for neighboring countries.
